Social Gallery & Brighton Museum: Celebrating Mod Style Through Film

Social Gallery CIC has collaborated closely with Brighton Museum & Art Gallery on their upcoming exhibition, The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958–66.

As part of this exciting partnership, we’ve created a short film exploring the life and legacy of Leicester-born Mod stylist and costume designer, Roger K Burton.

The 4-minute film – divided into three chapters: Growing up in Leicester, Mod Fashion, and Quadrophenia – offers a vivid, personal insight into Roger’s story. It captures his formative years, his influence on the Mod scene, and his iconic work on the cult film Quadrophenia.

This film forms part of Social Gallery’s Rebel Reels Collection – an evolving series of short films spotlighting influential, often under-recognised creative figures who’ve left a lasting imprint on youth subcultures.

About the Exhibition

Opening on 10 May 2025, The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958–66 is a vibrant celebration of 1960s Mod culture and style. Curated by Roger K Burton and sponsored by iconic Mod brand Ben Sherman, the exhibition showcases over 35 dressed mannequins and rare pieces from Burton’s renowned vintage fashion archive.

Visitors will step into the world of the Mods – with sharp tailoring, bold prints, and the unmistakable energy of a youth movement that redefined fashion. Featuring garments by designers such as Mary Quant and John Stephen, alongside photography, music references, and cultural artefacts, the show brings to life the rebellious spirit and enduring legacy of Mod style.
