What We Do

Social Gallery is a community interest company which aims to improve wellbeing and social connection through creative projects. Our work engages communities and individuals with shared experiences in social history projects, leading to the co-creation of exhibitions, films, books and events.

Past exhibitions have explored powerful social history themes, fashion, music and subcultures, creating social hubs where people meet bringing local communities together.

Our network of influential local, national and international creatives who have supported us to develop projects of significant cultural importance and capture and archive critical heritage-at-risk.

Vision

To work across Leicestershire, the Midlands and the UK to keep social history alive, by valuing and sharing untold stories of popular culture, social movements, communities, places and spaces.

Mission

Running cross-generational social history heritage and cultural projects which offer opportunities for people to tell their stories of work, play, social spaces, and everyday life – and to make these available for the general public and future generations.

Objectives

  • To work with individuals and community groups to bring social history to life through their participation and contributions to exhibitions, films, books, digital platforms and events.
  • To bring people together with an interest in social history and support them to share their stories with the wider public.
  • Protecting heritage at risk through collecting, showcasing and archiving stories, memories and artefacts from people involved in social and cultural movements whose voices might not otherwise be heard.
  • Foster a sense of wellbeing and harnessing the positive aspects of nostalgia and community connection through projects which give people opportunities to meet and learn from others and share their stories.
  • Offering opportunities for people to volunteer, join workshops and learn new skills as part of Social Gallery projects.
